It is important to make sure that you have all the equipment you need to safely and comfortably go out on the water kayaking. The most important one is the personal flotation device or, in simple terms, the life jacket that must fit the wearer. Select a PFD that is Coast Guard certified and that will enable the wearer to move freely.
Then, choose a paddle that is appropriate to your height and the width of the kayak you are going to use. A lightweight paddle can be preferred for long paddling as it does not cause fatigue as that of a heavy paddle. Make sure that the clothes are appropriate to the climate and water temperature, wear fast-drying fabrics and layers to control body heat.
Other items that are considered as necessary are the whistle, waterproof bag for storing personal belongings, and the bilge pump or sponge to remove water in the kayak. Do not forget to take along a bottle of drinking water, some snack and some protection from the hot sun. If you pack the right gear you can just enjoy the scenery and capture great moments on the water.
